Position description

Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Manager, Athletics oversees the management of the business of the department of Athletics and Recreation. This leadership accountability includes the proper coordination of all logistics for varsity team fulfillment of league commitments for home and away games, risk assessment and risk management activities, and for successful program operation.  Additionally, the Manager, Athletics will act as a department contact to liase with club teams as well as the MASU department who leads up the intramural teams on campus.  . Further, the Manager provides leadership, support and guidance to other members of the Athletics and Recreation department.

Position Responsibilities

  • Act as a liaison with the MASU department in the facilitation of  91·ðү’s Intramural program. Where MASU will provide the coordination, promotion and registration of the intramural team, Manager, Athletics will be the department contact to provide support and guidance as needed.  
  • Partner with and support 91·ðү’s club level sport team representatives to provide guidance of process for successful operation of their program.
  • Coordinate the monthly construction and management of the Athletic Centre gym schedule as well as Alumni Field bookings.
  • Responsible for the staffing of minor officials for varsity sports as assigned
  • Responsible for hiring and overseeing game day staff for all home varsity games
  • Oversee the operation and staffing of ticket gates for all home varsity games
  • Manages scheduling, fiscal, and other business matters for Athletics & Recreation in accordance with University and/or sport governing body policies.
  • Represents 91·ðÒ¯ at AUS/CIS, ACAA/CCAA meetings and at other times as required.
  • Develops and maintains a positive relationship with students, staff, faculty, and alumni of 91·ðÒ¯ and members of sport governing bodies as well as with community based organizations and agencies.
  • Accountable for all financial transactions of the department, including but not limited to, purchase orders, travel expense claims and portions of student staffing payroll.
  • Coordinate all varsity and club sport travel.  This includes, bus travel, car rentals, hotel bookings and meal allocations
  • Responsible for budget forecasts to keep the Director of Athletics and Recreation up to date on spending levels for team travel, equipment, home games, etc.
  • Coordinate the purchase of equipment for Athletics and Recreation as per allocated budgets for each program
  • Conducts the Athletics Centre’s required monthly Building Inspection
  • Other duties as may be required.

Work Environment

  • Meeting the expectations of multiple stakeholders can provide a stress inducing workload.
  • This position will require regular weekend and evening work during regular league season play which includes the following: mid-August through end of November and January through end of March. There will be minimal weekends and evening work during the remainder of the year.   
  • Some travel requirements are involved with the position.

Qualifications/skills

  • Bachelors degree in related field (e.g. Kinesiology, Recreation, Commerce or Business Administration)
  • A minimum of three years of related administrative experience in sport and recreation administration, and including risk management activities, preferably in a University or College setting
  • Knowledge of AUS/U Sports, ACAA/CCAA regulations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizing sport leagues, running schedules and regular season and playoff formats
  • Experience with planning, including event logistics and team travel
  • Experience with equipment inventory management and purchasing
  • Established budgetary and entrepreneurial experience, preferably within an athletics & recreation environment
  • Proven ability in hiring, supervising, and evaluating personnel.
  • Proven ability in cultivating, managing, and sustaining effective working relationships, preferably within a University/College environment, as well as with community and sport based organizations
