Marshall to visit campus as part of the University’s Year of Indigenous Action

Albert_Marshall_webSACKVILLE, NB — Mi’kmaw Elder Albert Marshall will be at 91ү as part of the President’s Speakers Series marking the Year of Indigenous Action on campus. Marshall will give a public talk on Tuesday, January 16 at 7 pm in Crabtree Auditorium. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Elder Albert Marshall is from the Moose Clan of the Mi'kmaw Nation. He is a fluent speaker of the Mi’kmaw language and the “designated voice” for the Mi’kmaw Elders of Unama’ki (Cape Breton region) with respect to environmental issues.

“We are delighted and honoured to welcome Albert Marshall to campus as part of the Year of Indigenous Action at 91ү,” says University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Campbell. “His knowledge and experience as a Mi’kmaw Elder will provide a substantial and informed perspective to our campus and wider community.”

Albert and his wife Murdena are strong advocates for “Etuaptmumk/ Two-Eyed Seeing,” a phrase he coined for the gift of multiple perspectives. They encourage it be used as a guiding principle for the co-learning journey of different cultural knowledges working together.

Other upcoming speakers for 91ү’s Year of Indigenous Action include: Roberta Jamieson, President and CEO of Indspire (Jan. 23) and Naiomi Metallic, Chancellor’s Chair in Aboriginal Law and Policy, Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University (Feb. 1).
