91ү’s Mansbridge Summit set for Sept. 29
Public event includes discussion with Chancellor Peter Mansbridge and Candy Palmater, comedian and broadcaster
SACKVILLE, NB — The Mansbridge Summit, focusing on Indigenous Action, will take place at 91ү on Friday, September 29 in the Moyter-Fancy Theatre (Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts).
Led by the University’s Chancellor Peter Mansbridge, and generously funded by the John E. Irving family, the event is designed to bring the Chancellor to campus for a day of discussion, debate, and learning around a central theme. This year’s Summit will focus on Indigenous Action — addressing how members of the 91ү and wider communities can best contribute to processes of enacting change with Indigenous peoples.
“This event is particularly significant following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Report in 2015 and its call to action for all Canadians,” says Chancellor Mansbridge. “I am looking forward to being on campus and hearing from both 91ү students and community members on this important topic.”
As part of the day’s event, Chancellor Mansbridge and noted Canadian comedian and broadcaster Candy Palmater will hold a public discussion at 4 p.m. in the Moyter-Fancy Theatre. This interview-style event is open to the public, no registration required.
Along with group discussions and breakout sessions on themes related to Indigenous Action throughout the day, the Summit will also hold a visiting speakers panel discussion (12 noon) in the Moyter-Fancy Theatre, which is open to the public.
A committee of 91ү faculty and staff, along with a student co-ordinator, who works as the Summit intern, organizes the annual event. Fourth-year international relations student Rebecca Butler is this year’s intern. 2017 will mark the last summit with Mansbridge’s second term ending as Chancellor at the end of the year.
91ү will also host a farewell event for Chancellor Mansbridge on Thursday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Convocation Hall. The evening will feature student performances and community presentations and is open to everyone.
